The wonderful Abigail Lapell being her wonderful self at Casa del Popolo. If you’ve never heard this girl’s music, you are in for a real treat. I met her so many years ago when I was an awkward and starstruck singer-songwriter trying to get some sort of space on a Montreal stage (or space in a room, whatever was available). Abigail hosted Catcall for many years, originally at the now-Cajibi formerly Cafe Ezperanza, and then at the larger Divan Orange venue. Unfortunately, she no longer lives in Montreal but visits frequently.

Just a few photos I managed to get before the battery of my camera died. These are from Headquarters Gallery and Boutique’s final exhibition/closing party. The brainpower behind this operation, Angie Johnson and Tyson Bodnarchuk, opened the store after moving from Winnipeg a couple of years ago. They named their last show, BFF (Best Friends Forever) appropriately. Johnson wrote, “it’s a retrospective look at all the amazing work and incredible talent that’s been showcased on our walls.”
I do love Johnson’s idea of SmartMart. “We plan to turn [the concept] into mini-marts, like an art mart, a fashion mart, a vintage mart…these kinds of pop-up places for art,” she explains. All that’s for certain is running these kinds of independent business take a lot of hard work and commitment. But it definitely could work in a city like Montreal.
On another note, I picked up an amazing art book. I will have to get around to writing a bit on it.
